MODERN HANOK AIRBNB

DESIGN CONCEPT
My design studies the relationship between a modern home and the Eastern Traditional style homes. Rather than building another Western modern home with Japanese traditional architecture influences, I was particularly interested in Korean Traditional Hanok Homes because of their unique features that seem to be similar to that of Japanese traditional architecture, yet very different. Adding wood and stone for both the interior and exterior of the home will add the physical and visual harmony between the architecture and nature.

Incorporating Hanji (a traditional Korean paper that is made from the bark of the mulberry tree which are used for walls and doors), Ondol (underfloor heating system), and Maru (a wide wooden floor area). The Hanji allows sunlight to come in, ventilation, evaporate moisture, and traps dust particles. Frank Lloyd Wright was inspired by Korean Architecture as well and used Ondol for his Jacobs House. I am planning on using stone for the roof and wood for the exterior of the house.
PROCESS
The process of this project was to first come up with the concept, create an adjacency chart, and a bubble diagram. Thinking of the concept, I was imagining what materials would be used, color schemes, and how each space in the airbnb would be used for. Once I had grasped the idea I was going for, I then sketched out the floor plan, roof ceiling plan, and the interior elevations of each space using Vectorworks. I then created digital mockups through Sketchup, Vectorworks, and Twinmotion to add textures, materials, decals, and lighting features. Going through these steps, I went over many desk critiques with my peers, refined my concept, sketches, and digital mockups.

Throughout this whole process, I was able to understand the design workflow, was able to conceptualize, and have a better understanding of 3-dimensional spaces.
